Position:  Marine Civil & Coastal Engineer / Project Manager

A Head of Department and Senior Management Team (SMT) Role. As an experienced key marine professional reporting to the Managing Director and working side by side with the Marine Manager you will oversee, manage and develop all operational projects and project teams for profitable, safe, efficient delivery including repeat work.

The Projects Manager will be a leader in managing complex, multi discipline £2m+ jobs within the marine, civil and construction industry, undertaking a range of specialist marine and coastal operations from tender through to planning, execution and closeout.

Essential attributes:

  • Strong leadership and negotiation skills.
  • Relevant offshore or site management experience managing complex, multi discipline jobs within the marine, civil and construction industry with specific experience in:
    • FEED studies for marine construction and/or decommissioning projects.
    • EPC marine construction and/or decommissioning.
    • Management of rock armour, nearshore construction, mooring installation/ decommissioning, marine current turbine installation/decommissioning, salvage, ROV survey and general chartering projects.
  • Experience in negotiating and managing of BIMCO, Logic, FIDIC, NEC and JCT contracts.
  • Attention to detail, forward planning and budgeting/financial knowledge are paramount.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • High level of practical seamanship with barge, Crane and Plant Operating experience.

Important Qualifications/Certification:

  • Applied Engineering Discipline Undergraduate Degree Beng or Bsc.
  • Minimum 7 years of leadership experience in nearshore and offshore marine, commercial, contractual management, construction projects and operations.
  • Experience in working within certified PAS 99, ISO9001, 14001 &OHSAS 18001 companies, ideally with direct vessel fleet operations.
  • Good working knowledge of marine regulatory frameworks and International Conventions to include MARPOL, SOLAS, etc.
  • Deep familiarity with specialist / marine construction contracts forms - to include NEC, JCT, FIDIC, LOGIC, IMCA.
  • Good working understanding of maritime law and shipmasters Business & Law.
  • Good working knowledge of BIMCO charters and vessel hire forms.
  • Excellent understanding of marine and construction emergency procedures, and salvage responses.
  • Excellent working knowledge of metocean and weather risk forecasting and management.
  • Workboat and specialist ship operations and vessel & stability – good technical knowledge.
  • Full Clean Driving Licence.
  • SMSTS/IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent.
  • Excellent practical working knowledge of hydrographic and land surveying, tidal surveys and calculations, charting.
  • Highly confident in all ICT incl. MS Project.
  • Competent in CAD.

The position will include:

  • Standard Salary: Negotiable.
  • Annual holiday entitlement of 5.6 weeks / 28 days including bank holidays.
  • Full time hours nominal 5 days in 7, nominally 12 hours per day. Extra full days worked will be paid pro rata of your salary.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities include - but are not limited to:

  • Establish, recruit, oversee, manage and develop strong relations with all teams and crew members ashore and afloat
  • Conduct risk assessments and method statements and arrange or carry out site investigations/surveys ensuring all key tender information is captured.  
  • Operational and technical sign-off and presentation of tenders to customers, optimising risk vs reward.
  • Ensure the management of the customers relationships throughout to build long term relationships and ensure customer satisfaction.
  • With SMT, build and continuously improve our clients in-house technical knowledge, know-how, and dynamism.
  • Establish matrices of responsibility showing clear division of responsibility between the client and its subcontractors, suppliers, customers and internally.
  • Lead and report at weekly projects planning meetings
  • Ensure that project scope, design basis and objectives are defined, best practices/lessons learned reviewed, detailed work plans, schedules, budgets, programmes and procedures are established and lead the development, submission and maintenance of all project documentation such as programmes, PSMS, HIRA, RAMS and all other project related documentation, ensuring resource optimisation at all times.
  • Ensure project execution in a safe manner, within budget, on schedule, and in conformance with the appropriate HSQE standards, specifications and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Lead periodic project meetings with customers to review progress/performance, discuss issues/concerns and facilitate problem resolution.
  • Lead the procurement of project related supplies, services and resources, ensuring the project teams adhere to KML spend authorities and procedures and deliver optimum cost efficiency and sustainable long-term supply chain relations.
  • Monitor and control all internal and external resource and expenditure against projects’ and annual budgets and cash flow projections.
  • Working closely with the marine department, ensure assets under your control/deployed on your project are fully maintained, ready for work and compliant with relevant statutory and contractual requirements
  • Implement management systems and controls and ensure continual development and improvement of operational, HSQE and financial performance of the projects department.
  • Report at every weekly planning and monthly SMT meeting on the health, safety, environmental and financial performance of all projects.
  • Lead HSQE Audits and lead Insurance/Accident/Incidents/Equipment Damage/Non-Conformance Reviews/Investigations and Root Cause Analyses.
  • Be a competent traveller by all modes as this is a highly mobile role: Based Falmouth, travel and site/vessel/offshore time required
  • Working evenings, weekends and customary holidays when required.

Advantageous / Desirable knowledge areas and qualifications

  • Engineering Masters/ Postgraduate Degree
  • ENG1/ML5 Medical certificate
  • All elements of STCW95 training (STCW95 PPR, FPFF, PSSR, Security Awareness).
  • CPCS cards to supervisor / manager level or equivalent plant operator cards (Blue Card)
  • Power Boat level 2 Commercial, Yachtmaster, CoC or similar.
  • Confined /Enclosed space training.
  • Advanced vessel knowledge, ship construction, RAOs.
  • Structural Engineering.
  • Good working knowledge of Marine Mooring Systems, Tugs and Towing
  • Floating Crane Heavy Lift Planning and Logistics.
  • Advanced Hydrographics, Meteorology and Met Ocean, Land Surveying.
  • IMDG Dangerous Goods – working knowledge.
  • HELM - Operational level
  • Access, Working at Height and Scaffolding – good knowledge.
